THE Newcastle ‘Sapphire Engineering’ Diamonds put in a determined performance to run out 53-39 winners over Scunthorpe Scorpions in the League Cup on Sunday.

It was a close encounter, with five of the 15 heats ending in stalemate.

The Diamonds, however – skippered by heat 15 winner Ludvig Lindgren – did enough to ensure the Tynesiders would claim all three League Cup points.

They put themselves in control of the meeting early on when Steve Worrall and Simon Nielsen got a win apiece to give Newcastle a six-point advantage.

Newcastle edged ahead further in heat six when Australian Christian Henry combined with Worrall to get the second home 5-1 of the night.

Scunthorpe did hit back briefly in heat seven through Alex Davies and Carl Wilkinson, but Henry replied with a race win of his own in the next heat to preserve the Diamonds’ lead.

The spoils were shared in heats nine and 10, but the victory was sealed for Newcastle when Worrall and Lindgren combined for a 4-2 in heat 13.

The Newcastle skipper would have the final say of the night as the Swede raced to victory in heat 15.

Henry finished second to give the Diamonds a convincing 14 point win in the meeting.

Newcastle Diamonds team manager George English said: “It was a good home win and all the team put in a solid performance, which is how our team is built, without having an out-and-out number one.

“We got off to a good start, which was important, and we then performed consistently to ensure Scunthorpe couldn’t come back at us.”
