Sensational Alex Sneddon sparkles with double at Championships

Alex Sneddon, from Jarrow and Hebburn AC, carved out a sparkling double in the Start Fitness North Eastern Championships at Gateshead over the weekend.

Sneddon was pressed by her team-mate Claire Simpson and Georgia Campbell, from South Shields Harriers, in the senior women’s 5000m as the trio were clear in the early stages.

Over the 12.5 laps, Sneddon gained command in the last mile and recorded a winning time of 17:36.05.

Campbell was second in 18;41.35 with Simpson third in 18:39.29.

In the 1500m, Sneddon also controlled the race and finished in 4;49.62, with Gateshead’s Michelle Nolan second in 4;52.89.

Melissa Raine was also in double-winning form for Jarrow in the under-20 women’s section.

Raine won the 100m hurdles in 15.38 and the javelin with 22.85m. In the long jump, she was second with 4.78m.

Shields’s Stephanie Addison, competing for Gateshead, gained an impressive sprint double in the same age group.

Addison eased clear of her team-mate Beth Pringle in the 200m in 25:93 and was again ahead of Gateshead’s Rosie Findlay in the 100m, clocking 12.23.

Jarrow’s Zara Teasdale won the under-17 girls’ long jump with 4.29m and soared over 1.60m to win the high jump. She finished second in the 80m hurdles in 12.95.

Kim Weatherburn, from the Shields club, won the under-20 women’s pole vault with 3.00m.

Shields’ Kerry Maguire was second in the senior women’s pole vault with 2.60m as Sally Scott, of Loughborough University, was first with 3.80m.

Jarrow’s James Andrew was second in the senior men’s 200m in 22.68 but was first in the long jump with 6.57m.

Amy Barron was second in the under-20 women’s javelin with 21.48m and was third in the 100m hurdles in 16.40.

Shields’ Alex Bainbridge was second for Gateshead in the under-20 high jump with 1.55m. Kieran Moffat, from the Shields club, just missed the bronze medal in the under-17 boys’ 1500m. Moffat finished fourth in 4:28.56.

Jarrow’s James Martin was also close to a medal in the under-15 boys’ 1500m, finishing fourth in 4;40.26.

Franki Salter, from the home club, won the woman’s title in the South Shields Park Run on Saturday.

Salter, only 16, finished 19th overall in the mixed field of 168 with 19:47 for the 5km over the Leas.

New member for the club, Michelle Robinson, was second in a personal best time of 21;38.

Gillian Nichol, also from South Shields Harriers, was third in a PB of 22:18.

Katie Wood, only 11, was 11th in a PB of 23:26.

Jarrow’s Jonny Evans reeled off another victory in the senior men’s race.

Evans won in 16:46 with Shields’ Mark Hodgson second in a PB of 16.54, and Richard Harrison was seventh in 18:14 with Nick Atkinson 11th in 18:47.
