On this day in 2000: Newcastle United lose Tyne-Wear derby - where are they now?

On this day in 2000, Sunderland defeated Newcastle United at St James’s Park as Alan Shearer missed a late penalty.

The home side took the lead early on through the late Gary Speed only to be cancelled out by Don Hutchinson’s second-half leveller.

And with just 14 minutes remaining, Micky Gray sent a wonderful cross into Shay Given’s box, which was met superbly by Niall Quinn, who headed the ball past the goalkeeper.

To compound matters for Newcastle United, Shearer saw a late penalty saved by Sunderland goalkeeper Tommy Sorenson.
