It means Saturday’s game has provoked a storm of excitement and interest around the town, with an attendance of around 2,500 anticipated at Mariners Park.

However, South Shields are waiting on advice from the FA and Northern Premier League officials over the coronavirus fears which are sweeping the nation.

A club statement said: “The club can confirm it is continuing with its preparations as usual for Saturday's game against FC United of Manchester at Mariners Park.

“Should any subsequent guidance be received from the Government, FA or league, we will inform supporters at the earliest opportunity.

“Until or unless that happens, the match will go ahead as planned.

“Tickets are selling extremely well and are available from the club website 24 hours a day, or by calling 0191 454 7800 or visiting Mariners Park, 12pm-5pm.”

Reports in the national media claimed that all fixtures in the top four leagues of English football could be played behind closed doors this weekend amid concerns about people passing the virus on.

There is no suggestion currently that the Mariners’ game – or any other non-league fixtures – will be subject to such measures, but with the match likely to attract a bigger crowd than many League Two matches, Shields officials are keeping an eye on the situation.

Shields are hoping to get clarifcation from either the FA or league over the next 24 hours.

Graham Fenton and Lee Picton’s side have won four of their last five games in the league as they look set for another promotion. They added Sunderland midfielder Bali Mumba to their squad on loan until the end of the season.
