South Shields Westoe are set to play their re-arranged Durham County Senior Cup match against Billingham RFC at Wood Terrace tomorrow.

The match should have been played in August, but Billingham asked for it to be re-arranged as they already had a fixture on the day which Westoe were happy to do.

The match will be a stern test for this young Westoe team as Billingham are currently fourth in National 3 North, two leagues higher than Westoe.

The last time the two teams met in the County Cup was at Billingham back in 2014, with the match ending in a 29-29 draw.

However, Westoe were awarded the tie via cup rules which state that in the event of a draw the away team are given the win.

They met twice in the National 3 North that season with Billingham coming away victorious in both encounters in Westoe’s relegation campaign.

This season things seem to be on the up for the Wood Terrace outfit with great moral amongst the players and competition for places in the first XV fiercely contested.

Last weekend saw the Shieldsmen travel to Northern with 10 tries scored between the two sides, with Luke Moffett and Mak Reeder starring.

Westoe once again putting the 60 minute gremlins behind them came away winners by 38-28, making it three league wins in a row.

This win against the team who are currently top of Durham & Northumberland 1 sent a message to other teams in the league that Westoe mean business this season.

There is now only three points difference between Northern and Westoe in eighth, so this league looks like it is going to be won or lost on bonus points.

The West Nautical sponsored Westoe second team are also at home tomorrow where they play hosts to Consett’s second team.

The team are hoping to bounce back from last week’s defeat at home to Darlington Mowden Park third team.

With the first team’s match being played at Woods Terrace, the second’s match will be played at Temple Park, both games kick-off at 3pm.
