Bottom side South Shields host Whitburn, who are currently just above them, in the Dukes ECB NEPL Premier Division’s vital relegation scrap of the day.

South Shields currently find themselves cut adrift at the basement, with 20 points the difference.

Whitburn skipper Dan Sherburn said: “Kieran Waterson and Craig Smith are away unavailable, while James Thompson is also missing.

“However, Andy Turns, Paul Shields and Lee Henderson all return from their holidays.

Sherburn added: “Brydon Carse should be available depending on Durham duties.

“A win this week is vital as the season end approaches, and the team is looking to pull away from its precarious position near the bottom.

“A winning streak will be very welcoming at this stage.”

Boldon, who are fourth in the First Division, find themselves 67 points behind top side Sacriston, meaning they probably have too much to do in mounting a title charge.

Boldon entertain bottom club Mainsforth, who themselves are fighting for their lives.

They are 12 points behind second bottom, Seaham Harbour in the race to avoid relegation.

In the Readers Durham Cricket League Division Two, Marsden – in second place – travel to Murton and fixture secretary James Sneller is in confident mood ahead of the game.

Sneller said: “If we don’t get rained off, it should be an easy 30 points for us.”

The two bottom clubs meet up as Silksworth host Boldon CA to fight for points and avoid the wooden spoon.

The home side currently hold a 19-point advantage and skipper Andy Barrass said: “The lads have put in some good work in my absence and have got some points on the board, so we’re hoping to continue that form.

“We’re at the stage where holidays are kicking in, but I am returning to the team this weekend.”
