WHITELEAS and Harton Cricket Club are building for the future after setting up a new Under-18 and academy side for the coming season.

The club, which plies its trade in the Durham Cricket League, has appointed experienced coach Sid Corner to spearhead the two new sides, and is actively recruiting for both teams.

The facilities are second to none, and we are hoping this will attract young people to come and play cricket at a very impressive and friendly set-up.

Corner, a former youth coach with Marsden CC, is delighted to be part of what he calls a fantastic opportunity.

He said: “Having spent a lot of enjoyable seasons at Marsden, the opportunity to be part of a new development with Whiteleas and Harton was extremely appealing.

“I’m a Whiteleas lad, and it’s absolutely fantastic to be so heavily involved in a venture that will help grow the cricket club. The facilities are second to none, and we are hoping this will attract young people to come and play cricket at a very impressive and friendly set-up.”

Vice-chairman Owen Peterson sees this as the next step for the Harton Welfare-based club.

He said: “The club has gone from strength to strength since I joined 10 years ago, therefore to be in a position where we can set up a junior section is a real achievement.

“The aspiration has always been to create junior sides, making the club more sustainable, but it isn’t an easy feat, as you need coaches as well as financial support.

“Bringing Sid on board is a massive coup for us as he comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience, which is vital at this stage.

“Our five-year plan includes the creation of Under-13 and 15 sides to compliment our Under-18s, therefore we are certainly on the right track.”

The club is grateful to receive the financial backing of Kevin Pascoe to assist with the development, but are calling upon other businesses for support. Any interested parties are asked to contact club chairman Gavin Peterson on 07753567947.

Net sessions are held on Sundays at Temple Park Centre for those aged 14 to 18, as well as at Boldon School on Mondays at 7.30pm. Those interested in joining can call Sid Corner on 07808 802861.
