South Shields' The Customs House team 'delighted' to win Movement for Good award, receiving cash boost of £1,000

The Customs House theatre, on Mill Dam, has won a £1,000 Movement for Good award from the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group thanks to nominations from the public.

The South Tyneside venue is one of 500 winners through the initiative set up by the specialist insurer, which is giving £1million in total to charities this summer.

Members of the public were invited to nominate causes close to their hearts, with 500 gifts of £1,000 up for grabs. More than 13,000 charities were nominated by over 210,000 participants.

The team at the South Shields theatre spoke of their ‘delight’ at having been selected for the award, saying the cash prize would help the organisation ‘continue working with some of the most vulnerable and under-represented’ people in the area.

“We are absolutely delighted to hear that we have won a Movement for Good Award,” said the Customs House’s development officer, Marie Campbell.

"Once again, our brilliant supporters have shown just how incredible they are by nominating The Customs House in their droves. We would like to thank each and everyone of them.

"This money will help us to continue the work we do across South Tyneside.”

The venue’s executive director, Ray Spencer, added that the prize money was a “A lovely contribution that will help us to continue working with some of the most vulnerable and under represented people in the borough.

"We would like to thank everyone who voted for us.”
