A GRAFFITI artist has been exercising his artistic rights at a South Tyneside gym.

Market Health Spa, in South Shields, has been given an unusual makeover to help inspire its customers to train harder.

The artist, known as Pie Eyed Piper, added his unique etchings to the walls of the gym, in Queen Street, South Shields.

The spray paint creations range from the gym’s logo of a beefed-up gorilla and comic book character The Hulk, to motivational phrases such as ‘no pain no gain’ and ‘squat ‘til you drop’.

The artist, 38, who lives in South Shields, said: “I come to the gym and they found out what I do so asked if I’d be interested in doing something to the walls.

“Straight away I was up for it and had a chat with them about the sort of thing they were after and then drew up some designs on the computer.

“I wanted to do something with a little bit of attitude and that looked cool and added some motivational phrases as well to spur people on.

“I’m really pleased with how it looks and everyone has had really good comments about it. I’ve even had people asking me to do bits of work for them.

“It’s sort of like having my own exhibition and the great thing about it is that it’s going to be there for a long time.”

Gym owner Kris Stephenson, who works alongside personal trainer Ross Wardle, said: “People were saying we should add a bit of colour in the gym and I thought it would be great to have someone do graffiti on the walls.

“It looks great and we’ve had loads of good feedback from it. We even had some new people sign up after we posted the pictures on Facebook.

“It’s so much better than what I was expecting and I think it really spurs people on to keep going.

“We’re going to get some graffiti done in the girls’ gym as well.

“I could have just bought pictures to hang up, but this is original and it looks brilliant – we’re so pleased with it.”

The gym is offering free personal training sessions to new members. To find out more, go to www.teamhealthspa.co.uk or call 454 0610.
