It’s practically a rite of passage to go for your first curry in Shields without your mam and dad – and it’s the go-to place for a birthday, catch up or night out.
So in honour of National Curry Week, which starts tomorrow (Monday, October 12) and runs until next Sunday, we’ve taken a look at your favourite places for a spicy one.

Aurora Restaurant, Burrow Street, South Shields
This restaurant comes top for reviewers looking for Indian food in Shields. All of the reviews are in the excellent or very good categories – and Mags5055 said: “The place itself is very clean staff well mannered
“The food was fabulous we all had different and tasted each other’s loved them all. Lamb very tasty, chicken still moist, beef full of flavour. Will go again and recommend to friends and family.”
Spice Garden, Ocean Road, South Shields
The highest rated Ocean Road haunt, this curry house has been hailed for its set menus, helpful staff and tasty food. Are you a regular visitor?
Spice One, South Avenue, South Shields
If you fancy straying from Ocean Road, Spice One is popular both for dining in and taking your dinner out. Recent reviewer David-And-Hayley said: “A little hidden gem situated behind Prince Edward Road, kind attentive staff and beautiful food.
“Went and it was pretty quiet and the service was still pretty quick. Would recommend.”
Cafe India, Ocean Road, South Shields
Despite a shaky start according to the most recent reviewer, Cafe India can deliver some of the best Indian delicacies you’ve ever had. Speaking just last week, Shelleydiggle said: “Our starters of onion bhaji and bhuna prawn on puri were the best we’ve ever had....good portion sizes and very tasty.
“Our main courses of chicken tikka madras, mushroom pilau rice and chips and prawn omelette with side salad were absolutely beautiful.”
Monsoon Indian Cuisine, Ocean Road, South Shields
With almost 100 reviewers scoring five out of five, why not visit Monsoon as part of your night on the town. Compliments have been paid for staff, service and aromatic dishes.
Lasun, Dean Road, South Shields
Away from the “curry centre” of Ocean Road, Lasun has been described as a hidden gem in South Tyneside. Susie97 said: “Pleased to see a hidden gem so busy! Away from the “Curry Centre” of the town, it obviously has a good reputation-and so it should.
“Staff so friendly, food superb and the new decor just adds that little bit more! Definitely worth a visit.”
Radhuni, Ocean Road, South Shields
If you want to be spoilt for choice, Radhuni is the place for you. Rosemaryearle said: “The food is lovely especially the onion bhajis! Good range of drinks and a huge range of different dishes to choose from. The mid week and Saturday menus are a bargain. Well worth a try.”
The Raj, Burrow Street, South Shields
If you’re looking for the best balti you’ve ever had, TripAdvisor reviewer Starthmorecatherine wants you to visit The Raj.
Tandoori National, Ocean Road, South Shields
Eileenf19 told other TripAdvisor users that Tandoori National is always her first pick for a curry – and that she would never go anywhere else on Ocean Road. Her review said: “The food and service is always to a very high standard.”
