BORN in Cuba of mixed Cuban/Jamaican descent, Laurel Aitken moved to Brixton in 1960 and became one of the early stars of the Blue Beat label.
He went on to become known as the Godfather of Ska, and this excellent collection brings together four original albums from his heyday.
There’s 1966’s Ska With Laurel, Laurel Aitken Says Fire from 1967, the 1969 concept album Scandal In A Brixton Market (with Girlie) and 1970’s The High Priest Of Reggae).
A fifth disc of singles and rarities means this is an essential buy for anyone who loves reggae. 9/10. GW
