WRITTEN amid a bitter break-up, and delayed for two years while her label concentrated resources elsewhere, 28-year-old Natalie Prass must be relieved to finally get this debut album off her chest.
If nothing else, she’s had plenty of time to hone its nine tracks, each of which come swathed in lush string and brass arrangements which perfectly compliment her delightful, whimsical vocal.
Initially, it seems they’re about to coalesce into a classic, with opener My Baby Don’t Understand Me striking a wondrous heartfelt chord whose sweeping melody and tragic chorus border on perfection.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the rest of the record can’t quite match that golden standard - but that’s not to say it doesn’t hold further delights.
Rarely, for instance, has hopelessness sounded so alluring as on Never Over You, while the sense of fantasy on closer It Is You is so vivid it wouldn’t sound out of place on a vintage Disney score.
It mightn’t live up to its early promise, but these jewels alone are reason enough to give it a try. 7/10. AW
