A TYPICALLY mind-bending trip, this latest solo effort from Animal Collective lynchpin Noah Lennox is, believe it or not, conspicuous for its relative lack of experimentation.
Instead, Grim Reaper sticks broadly within his established pallet (that is, The Beach Boys on more acid) and while it never rivals 2007’s exceptional Person Pitch, the results, once more, are deeply satisfying.
Like any of his records, its appeal can take a few listens to sink in, but once you’re accustomed to it, the fruits of this strange, psychedelic world just keep on giving.
It helps that among the ocean of reverb and distortion it also bears a clutch of killer melodies; witness the electric throb of Mr Noah and enveloping echo of Boys Latin. 7/10. AW
