WERE you fooled? This was our April Fool story from this morning about our Joe aiming for Top Gear greatness:
Insiders in the entertainment industry say the South Shields-born star could be in the driving seat as the hunt goes on for a replacement for the show’s disgraced host Jeremy Clarkson.
Joe, 23, is no stranger to the TV world – having stormed to victory on reality shows The X Factor, Popstar to Operastar and The Jump.
Joe, from Westoe, South Shields, is staying tight-lipped about the speculation – but many in the industry believe Joe would be perfect for the role.
He is also known to be a fan of the show.
Industry expert Avril Narren said: “After the Clarkson debacle, many believe the show needs a new clean-cut image and Joe fits the bill.
I am a fan of the show. I’ve watched it for years. It would be really fun to host it but I can’t really say anything else about it.Joe McElderry
“There are all kind of possibilities to combine motoring with music.”
A source close to Joe said: “Joe is a huge fan of Top Gear.
“People love him and he’s really into cars and driving as well.
“I think he could give the show a whole new image.”
Clarkson was recently let go from the BBC show after an internal enquiry into reports he had assaulted a producer in a row over food.
It is not yet known whether Clarkson’s co-hosts, Richard Hammond and James May, would continue on the show.
When contacted by the Gazette, Joe, wished to say nothing about the speculation.
He said: “I am a fan of the show. I’ve watched it for years.
“It would be really fun to host it but I really can’t say anything else about it.”
