Metros will now run on Sunday after Nexus decided to delay modernisation work.

Modernisation work which would have seen Metro services on its lines in South Tyneside disrupted has been postponed to help pop fans reach a show.

Trains from Jarrow and Brockley Whins between Gateshead Stadium had been due to stop between 7.30am and 7.30pm on Sunday.

But now, Nexus has taken the decision to hold off on the improvements to avoid a clash with the free Sunday Concert at Bents Park in South Shields.

Atomic Kitten and 5ive are due to perform as the summer series of events kicks off in on the seafront.

Nexus, which owns, manages and is modernising Metro, will reschedule the work for autumn or winter.

This Sunday’s free Sunday Concert in Bents Park will run from 1pm and 5pm.

Councillor Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council with responsibility for culture and leisure, said: “We are delighted that Nexus is supporting us by postponing the modernisation works originally scheduled for this weekend.

“With much of the crowd expected to travel by Metro, this will certainly make it easier for people to come along to our first free open air concert where they will enjoy an amazing show of chart topping hits from some of the biggest bands in pop music.”

Huw Lewis, corporate manager for customer services and communications for Nexus, said: “We have called off our modernisation work on this occasion to allow for an undisrupted Metro services to run for the free Sunday Concert in South Shields.

“We are delivering a huge programme of modernisation work which will benefit Metro passengers and the economy for decades to come.
“This does mean that we have to close Metro lines at weekends.

“However, we try to be as flexible as possible when major events take place, which is why we have reviewed this weekend’s work to postpone the work that we had planned on Sunday.”
