A TRIO of South Tyneside women are up for awards.

Rugby player Katy McLean and pop group Little Mix have been shortlisted for honours at 2015’s Glamour Women of the Year Awards.

England women’s rugby captain Katy is up for the prize for best sportswoman at the magazine’s awards bash.

The 28-year-old led her team to victory at the female rugby world cup last year.

The South Shields-born sporting star skippered England to their first world cup win in 20 years by beating Canada 21-9 in France.

She’s up against the likes of England women’s cricket captain Charlotte Edwards and gold medal-winning gymnast, Becky Downie for the award.

Little Mix, including South Shields girls Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall, are in the running to retain the band accolade they won last year.

The girl group – made up, besides Perrie and Jade, of Jesy Nelson and Leigh-Anne Pinnock – rose to fame after winning TV talent show The X Factor in 2011.

They were the first group to ever come out on top in the ITV show and have gone on to release two top 10 albums and tour the world.

The girls are up against groups including Fifth Harmony, Neon Jungle and The Saturdays. Norma Thirlwall, mum of band member Jade, 22, of Laygate, South Shields, said: “The girls won last year, so hopefully they can do it again this year.

“They’re doing so great, and I’m really proud that they’ve been nominated again.”

Debbie Hogg, mum of band member Perrie, 21, of Whiteleas, South Shields, added: “I’m just proud as punch that the girls have been nominated for these awards.

“I used to sit every year and read about who was up for them, and now it’s my daughter. It’s just great.”

Little Mix are also nominated for the title of the UK’s favourite music act at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.
