A PAIR of South Tyneside actresses have created a platform for performers to test out their new material.

Kylie Ann Ford and Rachael Walsh - who together make up Generic Girl Productions – are hosting The Scratch Night at The Customs House, in South Shields.

The Mill Dam venue will become a haven for unpolished performances and untested theatrics on Friday, May 9.

Kylie, 26, from South Shields, said: “It’s a night when people can get up on stage and try out material they’ve been working on in front of an audience, who will then give them feedback.

“This is the first one, so we’re excited to see how it goes and hopefully we’re going to hold one every season.

“It’ll give people a chance to put things they’ve been working on up on a stage and see how they go down in front of an audience.

“There are a lot of theatre groups that do shows but for individual people who’ve written a show, it can be very difficult for them to get it in front of an audience.

“Hiring out a venue is expensive, and doing that to test out a new piece of material isn’t always possible and can be risky.

“This night will be a great way to figure out if people like what you’re doing and if it comes across the way you intended it to.”

She added: “We’re really hoping
it will encourage people to create their own theatre. People talk about ideas all the time but can’t afford to give it a go, so this is their chance. It’s a great networking opportunity too to meet up with other theatre people and maybe work together in the future.

“It’s not just about them getting in front of an audience though – it’ll be a great night for the audience too.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity for people to see what the region has to offer, and there’s a lot of talent here.

“We’ve got some stand up comedians, plays and musicals, so it’s going to be a very fun and entertaining night.”

Tickets for The Scratch Night, which kicks off at 7.45pm, cost £3.
