The original Stig will be unmasked when he makes a visit to South Shields next week.

For years, millions of BBC TV’s Top Gear fans were kept in suspense about the identity of the expert racing driver dressed in white who never removed his helmet.

Now his identity is known to be cockney, Perry McCarthy, who is taking in the Customs House as part of a UK tour.

The crowd will be given the chance to ask him questions during his one-man show, An Audience with The Original Stig, Perry McCarthy.

Theatre goers will hear of what happened behind the scenes at Top Gear and his secret life as The Stig.

He will also talk about how his passion for speed led to Formula One racing, misadventures at 200mph and his comic adventures with Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, Nigel Mansell, Murray Walker and Jeremy Clarkson.
