A ROCK musical with a religious vibe is on its way to the region.
Godspell In Concert is coming to the Sunderland Empire on Sunday, May 3.
The legendary rock musical by Stephen Schwartz is a series of parables, based mostly on the Gospel of Matthew.
Andy Abraham, runner-up of the X Factor in 2005, stars in the show as John the Baptist and Judas.
He said: “It’s going brilliant and the cast is really raring to go.
“The difference between this show and the original musical is that this is a little bit more intense.
“It’s a rock musical and the fact that we’ve got so many incredible voices brings it up to a whole new level.
“It’s a modern-day traditional story of following and believing and being part of a group and I kind of come in to break that group apart.
“It is a religious story but a modern-day take on it. It’s about Jesus gaining followers, but you don’t have to be religious to enjoy it.
“We’re getting a very eclectic crowd coming along to see it and people from all walks of life who are leaving feeling overwhelmed by the music and the staging – it’s fantastic.”
Andy added: “We’re all really looking forward to coming to Sunderland, it’s going to be great.
“The 10 years since I was on the X Factor have absolutely flown over and the fact that I’m still in the business is brilliant – I suppose I must be doing something right.
“I’ve had a lot of incredible opportunities, and musicals were something I never even thought I’d be able to do.
“I grew up watching great musical films like West Side Story and the Wizard of Oz and I never imagined I’d be a part of something like that, but I love it.

“There’s still a lot I’d like to try and I’d love to do more acting.”
The show will also feature Newcastle-based choir Voice of the Town, who won the chance to appear in the show.
