The annual Heritage Open Days scheme is a free national event which encourages local people to enjoy the culture around them.
While it won’t be extensive as in previous years, it’s still a great opportunity to see properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge admission.
And here's a taster of what you can see.
1. St Paul's Church Jarrow
Get along to St Paul's Church and Monastic Site, Jarrow, to get a free look around the home of the Venerable Bede. You can visit from Friday, September 11, to Sunday, September 20. Find out more at https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk. Photo: gz
2. St Peter's Church, Harton Village
Get along to St Peter's Church in Harton on Saturday, September 12, and Saturday, September 19. You can pay a visit between 2pm and 4pm on both days to look at a church with a fascinating history. Photo: TR
3. Enjoy beautiful Whitburn
A Whitburn local history walk is planned on Sunday, September 13. Join Whitburn Local History Group for an informative walk around the historic centre of Whitburn, from 2pm to 4pm.

4. Arbeia Roman Fort
A tour of the barracks at Arbeia is planned on Thursday, September 17. It starts at 11am and lasts for 45 minutes. Join Arbeia's curator for an expert tour of the Barracks. Photo: Stu Norton
