South Shields singer Joe McElderry has posted a picture of his new toned self on social media after recent jibes about his weight.

In August, a national newspaper suggested the former X Factor and Popstar to Opera Star winner had a “fuller frame”, accompanying the article with an unflattering picture of him slouched on a sofa on ITV’s morning chat show Lorraine.

Yesterday he posted a slim-looking selfie on his Instagram account joemcelderry91, with the message: “Sober October seems to be providing some kind of abs haha!!”

And on Twitter he wrote: “So sober October is going well but every night my dream is always related to prosecco is some form for the past four nights!”

Fans loved the new, slimmed-down look, with julie_4368 commenting: “Looking good Joe Xx.”

Joe, 24, has recently been appearing at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool in a stage version of The Who’s rock opera Tommy.

Last night he was playing in Hartlepool as part of his licve and unplugged Evolution tour, and tomorrow night he has a gig in his hometown South Shields.
