Construction work on a new supermarket in South Tyneside is set to begin next year.
Plans for an Aldi store to be built in Hebburn were approved in December, last year.
Supermarket bosses now say that preliminary site preparations are underway and work will begin next year.
An Aldi spokesperson said: “We are currently completing preliminary site preparations ahead of beginning construction next year.
“We will keep the local community updated on developments.”
The German company, which has more than 9,000 stores worldwide, will be redeveloping land off Glen Street, which will also see a free customer car park with 70 spaces being created.
It was given the go-ahead by South Tyneside Council’s planning committee.
The plans received a very positive response when they were unveiled at a public exhibition in July, last year.
More than 97% of all feedback received from the local community has been in support of the proposal.
It was said that work must start within three years.
