Newcastle United suffered an agonising semi-final defeat in the Hong Kong Football Club Citi Soccer Sevens tournament yesterday.

After being knocked out of the cup competition by FC Seoul, they were beaten 3-2 by Eastern Sports Club in the runners-up shield.

Peter Beardsley’s side came back from 2-0 down to level the game thanks to goals from Jack Hunter and Jamie Holmes, but they were beaten by a last-minute goal.

United had beaten Hong Kong FC and Kitchee on Saturday, but they lost their last group game against Aston Villa.

FC Seoul beat Newcastle 4-2 in the last eight the following day, and the loss to Eastern ended their participation in the competition, which they won in 2012.
