Man and woman assaulted outside South Shields Metro Station

A police investigation has been launched after a man and a woman were attacked in South Shields.

The assault happened at 6.10pm yesterday outside the Metro Station in nearby Queen Street.

A 26-year old man and 27-year-old woman were assaulted by a group of men.

Both received hospital treatment at South Tyneside District Hospital for their injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatening.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and is currently in police custody.

Officers are carrying out enquiries and appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward.
