'She was a beautiful soul': Family pay tribute as police confirm name of woman killed in South Shields bus collision

The family of a woman who died following a collision with a bus in South Shields have today paid tribute to her “beautiful soul” as Northumbria Police released her name.

The loved ones of Janet Louise Carey, 51, from the town, today spoke of their heartbreak as they released a statement through Northumbria Police.

Police and paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service attended, but Janet was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for several hours while inquiries got underway.

The investigation has continued through the Bank Holiday weekend and details are still being gathered by traffic officers as they work to establish the circumstances around the collision.

Specialist family liaison officers were sent to support the Janet’s family, with flowers laid at the scene in memory of her.

In a tribute, her loved ones have said she was “a beautiful soul, tragically taken too soon from her loving family and friends.”

Pc Steven Malt, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, is continuing to ask for anybody who witnessed the collision to come forward.

He said: “Janet’s family are understandably devastated by this tragedy and we are continuing to offer them support at this difficult time.

“We would continue to ask that the public respect their privacy as an investigation into the circumstances around the collision continues.

“We still need to trace all the witnesses to the collision so if anyone saw what happened we would ask you to contact police.

A spokesperson for Stagecoach North East has said: “We are co-operating with the police and helping with their investigation. Our thoughts are with the woman’s family.”
