South Tyneside Council received a planning application in April 2020 for a business space at 1 Birtwhistle Avenue in the town.
The plans came from Darmistic Dog Grooming with proposed opening hours including 9am-6pm, Monday to Friday and 9am-5pm on Saturday.

According to a decision report prepared by planning officers, the business will employ one full-time staff member with a maximum of three to four dogs on site at any one time.
The report goes on to say: “The character of this row of properties along Birtwistle Avenue is commercial (and) the street already sees significant activity throughout the day.
“The opening hours proposed at the dog grooming parlour reflect those of the surrounding retail and business units.

No objections were received from the council’s environmental health department which described the plans as an “appropriate development in a mixed use area.”
Under planning conditions, works to convert the unit must take place within the next three years.
The dog grooming industry has been growing in recent years, with new parlours opening up in premises around the North East.
