Westoe weathered the storm to put in probably their finest performances of the season in beating Consett 24-13 in front of a wind-swept crowd.

Playing uphill and into a strong breeze, Westoe took immediate control with some punishing forward play, driving them towards the Consett line.

A pick and drive from lock, John Younghusband, split the defence and following quick recycling the ball was spun wide with an Arnold miss-pass to centre Reggie Fasa, who sped into the corner to open the score in less than two minutes.

But Consett immediately hit back, scoring a try, conversioan and penalty to lead 10-5 with just seven minutes on the clock.

With the away team gaining confidence by the minute, Westoe’s defence held firm, with some bone-crunching tackling, led by the front-row juggernauts of Elliott, Lamb and Scorer.

With Connor Pascoe stepping into the scrum-half role, Westoe appeared to be wearing the Consett pack down, keeping the ball moving wide at every opportunity, with the Westoe centres constantly smashing into their opponents, highlighted by a Fasa hand-off that had the crowd baying with glee.

With a minute of the half to play, centre Michael Potts re-lit the fire with a scathing run through the Consett defence, taking the score to 10-10 at half time.

Within two minutes of the whistle, Westoe’s pack struck again. A spectacular driving maul took the side within five metres of the line, where flanker Sean Ramsay, picked and drove the last few yards to touch down near the posts, converted by Arnold.

Consett fought back and a penalty brought the score to 17-13 with a quarter left to play and the game still within the balance.

The game was not decide until the 35th minute, when a scrappy line-out by Consett, spilled the ball, only for lock Younghusband to scoop up and drive his way over the line, winning the match, securing the four-try bonus and denying Consett a losing bonus in one brutal blow.

It was a sterling performances from the whole side, with a special mention to young Colts, Connor Pascoe and replacement flanker Liam Jackson.
