Arbeia, South Shield’s Roman Fort reopened to visitors on Monday, July 27, for the first time since lockdown back in March 2020.
But due to unforeseen and essential maintenance works, the museum had to swiftly close its doors again and would remain closed until Monday, August 24, at the earliest.

Guidance for the new social distancing rules have been published on Arbeia’s website and visitors are asked to book tickets in advance – but no future dates are currently available.
A statement on the Roman Fort’s Facebook page reads: “Arbeia will be closed for essential emergency maintenance work at least until 24 August. If you have booked a ticket we will be in touch with you shortly. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.”
Social distancing measures mean that when Arbeia does reopen, a limited number of people will be admitted at any one time and people are asked to book their visits in advance.
