The law, and the guidance, on meeting up with friends and family during North East local lockdown

Under additional restrictions brought in to the North East last week, people across seven areas in our region were told people should not socialise with people from outside their household or their support bubble.

While the restrictions are just advisory, leaders have urged people to follow them to help its economy survive and head for a return to normality.

But a number of venues have shared social media posts explaining while the ‘rule of six’ is in law and can lead to a fine, the regional measure asking people to not socialise with others is only advisory.

Now the leaders of Sunderland City Council, South Tyneside Council, Durham County Council, Newcastle City Council, North Tyneside Council and Northumberland County Council have all put their names to a statement explaining their take on the restrictions and hospitality venues.

It also comes after pubs and restaurants across the country were today, Tuesday, September 22, told from Thursday they must close at 10pm, with table service only, a week after it was imposed in the North East.

The council leaders say they are still seeking financial support for businesses facing a loss in trade.

In a statement, the leaders said: “The sight of our usually busy city centres and high streets falling into near-silence when 10pm passed on Friday night once again emphasised the need for government to help us to support the businesses inevitably impacted by these necessary restrictions.

“If we are to wrestle control back from the virus and protect our region, we all need to comply with the new legislation and follow the guidance.

"The better we do this in the short term, the sooner they will be relaxed.

“As we settle into this new period and become accustomed to the changes, we are calling on everyone to ensure they comply with the new measures, whether or not they have been written into law.

"But, as leaders of seven local authorities and a Combined Authority, we urge you all to comply with every request.

"The North East remains open for business but these measures are there to allow us to enjoy the region's wonderful towns and cities safely.”
