Currently, Sunderland have five Aldi supermarkets in Pennywell, Millfield, Southwick, Hall Farm and the Hylton Riverside Park, although the latter is set to close during the first half of 2021, with staff relocating to other stores.

Opening stores in both Grangetown/Ryhope and Houghton would leave Wearsiders with plenty of choice on what branch they wish to shop at.

At the time of opening, manager Rikki Elliott said: “We’re really looking forward to opening the new Aldi store here in Pennywell which will allow the local community to access the everyday essentials they need during this challenging time.”

For residents living in South Shields, the news may be welcomed as the town currently has only one Aldi supermarket on Chichester Road.

The exact locations of where Aldi are looking to build stores remains unknown at this time.
