Work complete on £600,000 new facilities to improve life for pupils at South Shields school

Additional rooms and a therapy space have just been completed at Bamburgh School, in Norham Avenue, South Shields which caters for children with special educational needs.

The new facilities have been built at a cost of more than £600,000.

Headteacher at the school, Peter Nord, said: “The investment in our school is extremely welcome.

"Our children, who have a range of medical, physical, social, emotional and learning difficulties, are looking forward to using the therapy space in particular after the Easter break.”

He added: “These specialist facilities have enhanced our teaching environment and should lead to better outcomes for our pupils.”

The development was carried out by Metropolis Architecture Ltd on behalf of South Tyneside Council.

Cllr Moira Smith, South Tyneside Council’s lead member for children, young people and families, has welcomed the revamp at the school.

She said: “We are committed to giving all our young people in South Tyneside the best start in life and providing the resources they need is a key to that.

“This project is the latest in a series of improvements we have made over the past few years to improve outcomes for children with special educational needs.

“Hopefully this will give parents and carers of children with special needs confidence that we are doing all we can help their children achieve their full potential.”

Bamburgh School is maintained by South Tyneside Education Authority.
