Health secretary Matt Hancock praised the NHS staff, military, contractors and volunteers who turned the site, near to Nissan’s Wearside plant, into a 460-bed hospital in just weeks as the fight against the coronavirus pandemic continues.

The site was officially opened by the Countess of Wessex, while a host of celebrities from the region sent their best wishes via video to NHS staff on the day.

As the facility was opened, a special ‘time lapse’ video was released to show how the new hospital was created in such a short space of time.
