

South Tyneside's covid hot spots as area has highest coronavirus case rate in North East
These are the areas in the local authority, which currently has the highest Covid case rate in the North East, with the highest and lowest rates recorded between Saturday, December 5 and Friday, December 11, according to official data.
The case rate takes into account the number of people living in each area compared to the number of people who have tested positive for the virus and are measured by 100,000 people.
The local authority has a case rate of 308.7 per 100,000 people.
The first six areas are have the highest case rates and the second six have the lowest.
A surge in Covid-19 cases at South Tyneside District Hospital means medical staff are now dealing with more than double the number of patients now than at the start of the pandemic.
The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two). Pictures are for illustrative purposes only.
