Coronavirus: South Shields MP Emma Lewell-Buck closes office to public amid coronavirus pandemic

The Labour MP urged her constituents to “stay safe” and “look after each other” as she made the announcement on her Twitter account on Wednesday, March 18.

She said she had made the decision in the interests of public health, following the latest advice from the government.

On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged people to “avoid pubs, clubs, theatres and other such social venues” to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

People have also been advised to stop non-essential contact with others and all unnecessary travel and should start working from home "where they possibly can".

There are now more than 1,950 cases confirmed across the the country.

However the MP reassured South Shields residents that she would still be there to help them and would be answering calls and emails in the usual way.

Ms Lewell-Buck said: “In the interest of public health and following the latest government advice, my constituency office is now closed to the public.

“Please be aware this does not change what I can do to help you, my staff and I will continue to respond to telephone calls and emails in the usual way.

She added: “I hope you are all staying safe and looking after each other during these unprecedented times.”

Anyone displaying symptoms of the virus – a continuous cough or high temperature – should self-isolate for 14 days.
