North East falls to sixth place for total population vaccinated - after starting the year in top spot
After leading from the front, the North East is now placed in six position for the total number of people given their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.
Figures gathered on Sunday, January 10, showed the region was in first out of seven places across England for the number of patients who had been given initial treatment, as well as the number of people aged 80 and over.
The latest statistics, which date to Sunday, February 7, show while it remains in second place for the number of over 80s covered, it has fallen to sixth place for the total number of adults vaccinated.
The region – along with others – has experienced supply issues with the doses, so while staff have been ready to welcome in patients, they have been left waiting for deliveries as the programme is rolled out.
The Government confirmed yesterday, Sunday, February 14, it had covered 15 million people across the UK with their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccines, having targeted those most at risk from serious ill health first.
These were residents in a care home for older adults and staff working in care homes for older adults; those 80 years of age and over and frontline health and social care workers; those 75 years of age and over and all those 70 years of age and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals, not including pregnant women and those under 16 years of age.
Today, the programme begins to cover the next group, those aged 60 to 69.
The region has been praised for its efforts to run the immunisation programme, the biggest in the history of the NHS, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson noting Sunderland’s success in treating care home residents.
The leaders of the LA7 – the seven authorities of Northumberland, Sunderland, South Tyneside, County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle and North Tyneside – have also congratulated all those who have helped in the effort.
