The X Factor winner performed outside South Tyneside District Hospital during this evening’s national Clap for Carers.
Joe, 28, sang The Climb, his chart-topping debut single, released after he won the ITV show in 2009.
Health worker Michael Kent, 37, caught the impromptu performance on video.
“It was a real surprise,” he said.
“It was great of Joe to come along and show his support.”
