South Shields singing sensation Joe McElderry was the perfect pick-me-up for hospital staff.

The X Factor winner performed outside South Tyneside District Hospital during this evening’s national Clap for Carers.

Joe, 28, sang The Climb, his chart-topping debut single, released after he won the ITV show in 2009.

Health worker Michael Kent, 37, caught the impromptu performance on video.
