Government measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus have left the streets of South Shields extremely quiet.

Although Saturday morning saw people turn out to buy essentials or queue for prescriptions at Boots on King Street, later in the day the town was almost deserted.

The measures were introduced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday, March 20, as he follows medical and scientific advice on slowing down the spread of the illness to help the NHS cope.
