South Tyneside under Tier 4 – Health Secretary Matt Hancock moves the North East into tightest restrictions

Speaking in the House of Commons on Wednesday, December 30, Matt Hancock revealed that most of England is now in either Tier 3 or Tier 4, with the North East moving into the highest tier.

The Health Secretary has confirmed that the new rules will come into effect from one minute after midnight on Thursday, December 31.

It means that members of the public “must stay at home” unless there is a “reasonable excuse”.

So, what are the Tier 4 restrictions?

Pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes will remain closed except those operating a takeaway or click and collect service.

Non-essential shops, gyms, leisure and entertainment venues must close under the toughest restrictions.

Hairdressers and barbers must also close to customers and personal beauty treatments must not be carried out.

People must not meet socially indoors or in most outdoor places with anybody you do not live with or in a support bubble with - this includes in any private garden or at most outdoor venues.

Accommodation such as hotels, B&Bs, campsites, and guest houses must stay closed and you cannot travel abroad.

There will be no public attendance at spectator sport or indoor performances.

Which public places are allowed to stay open?

Essential stores such as supermarkets and pharmacies can remain open, weddings can go ahead with six attendees and communal worship can continue.

How long will the tier system last?

MPs voted to allow the tier system to remain in place until at least January 27.

The next review will take place in two weeks and can be expected on either January 13 or 14.
