National Smile Month started this week and we are marking the occasion with a look back at 8 Shields Gazette archive photos which show the borough at its happiest.
We have delightful reminders from St Matthew’s School in 2004 where they were telling funny stories and from Marine Park Primary School where balloon hats were going down a treat in 2010.
We’ve got Westoe Crown Primary pupils doing something funny for Comic Relief in 2009 and laughs aplenty at the Westovians Theatre.
But don’t just take our word for it. Take a look and put a smile on your face!
5. Plenty of laughs at the call centre

6. What a day of shopping
Christmas shoppers were pictured on the Echo train to London in 1994. Here are Beatrice Joyce and Kath Slattery who shopped with smiles on their faces. Photo: Sunderland Echo
7. Ha'way Sunderland!
Michael Oliver was pictured with members of his staff, left to right; Beverley Mason, Sophie Hourigan, Claire Cavanagh, Gillian Gaffney and Sarah Lemon, and some of the donated Sunderland shirts. But who can tell us more about this 2012 scene? Photo: Picture by Peter Berry
8. Comedy and panto - a great mix in 2005
