A huge milestone will be reached next year when Her Majesty will have marked 70 years as Queen. To mark the achievement, an initiative called The Queen's Green Canopy has been launched.
It encourages people to plant a tree for the jubilee but the people of South Tyneside are already experts at helping the environment as these retro photos show.
