To mark UK Coffee Week from October 19-25, which celebrates the nation's coffee industry as well as supporting coffee-growing communities, we’ve rounded up some of the best independent cafes and coffee shops in the area, in no particular order.
Note that while some of the smaller venues are not available for sit in yet, due to social distancing, you can still call by for a takeout.
1. Clifton Cafe
The cafe is open 8am to 3pm for sit in coffees, teas, breakfasts and sweet treats, with social distancing in place. But you can also order some of its excellent afternoon teas and more for takeaway and delivery. Photo: submitted
2. Bistro No4, East Boldon
This Station Road recently reopened after a major revamp - and it's looking great. It's a lovely spot for breakfast or a coffee with your household and / or bubble. Photo: submitted
3. Sea Change, Ocean Road
This community cafe offers great cuppas as well as everything from children's afternoon teas to top-notch vegetarian food. Look out for its weekly specials, or place an order from its Sea Change at home menu. Photo: JPI Media
4. Hive Coffee Company, Jarrow
Open Monday to Sunday 10am to 3pm, Hive is running a special UK Coffee Week cake. Proceeds from a coffee and walnut cake will go to Project Waterfall, with 20p from every coffee sold this week going to the cause also. The charity brings clean water to coffee-growing communities across the world. Photo: JPI Media
