Popular South Shields pub closes for £434,000 refurbishment work

A South Shields pub has closed for refurbishment work.

The New Crown Hotel, on Mowbray Road, in South Shields, has temporarily closed as it undergoes more than £434,000-worth of refurbishment work.

Operated by hospitality group Marston’s, the popular venue will relaunch under the brand’s new sports concept ‘Grandstand’, with market-leading big screen technology, menus, and events.

The pub closed its doors to members of the public on Monday, November 17, and will reopen on Wednesday, December 10, ahead of what will likely be a busy Christmas period.

The work will see a new three-metre long and 1.8-metre tall screen, a multiple screen setup, state-of-the-art sound systems and flexible tiered seating to deliver a ‘stadium-style’ experience at the New Crown Hotel.

To continue the sports theme, the pub will reopen with a brand-new pool table, an improved darts area, and local sports memorabilia decorating the venue.

Members of the public are being encouraged to share photographs and items to celebrate the achievements of local sports stars and teams, both past and present.

As part of the investment, there will also be a refurbished outdoor area that will see TV screens added, with customers also being able to order through Marston’s ‘Order & Pay’ app.

Grace Thompson, General Manager of the New Crown Hotel, has expressed her excitement at being able to welcome members of the public back to the new-look pub.

She said: “We’re so excited to show off the new and improved pub.

“With a calendar of sports up ahead, the New Crown Hotel will be the perfect destination to get involved in big event atmosphere and soak up the action, especially thanks to some amazing new technology, food and drink offers and events.”

When it reopens, the New Crown Hotel will show all key sporting fixtures including football, rugby, cricket, tennis, F1, darts, and more.

A new range of bar food will also be introduced, which will feature a ‘Match Day Menu’ full of hand-held bites such as nachos and chicken wings.

Marston’s is also offering the chance for local sports teams to apply for a ‘Black Card’, which will give them access to exclusive offers, endless chips on team nights, and rewards for celebrating wins at their local pub.
