Burglary can be one of the most distressing crimes. It’s not just about the belongings that are stolen, but the knowledge someone has invaded your personal space, often while you slept, and been through your things.
The latest statistics show how much crime rates, including burglary, vary across England, and within the North East.
On average, across England, there were 6.3 residential burglaries recorded per 1,000 households during the year ending in December 2025.
The national crime rate during the same period, the latest for which figures have been published by the Office for National Statistics, was 83.5 offences per 1,000 population.
In the North East, the burglary rate in some areas is more than double that in other places, with a similar disparity when it comes to the overall crime rate.
Below are the burglary rates for areas across the region, during the year ending in December 2025, listed from lowest to highest.
