See the amazing transformation of eyesore Beach Road boarding house into stunning affordable apartments

The former residential boarding house in Beach Road has undergone extensive renovations to turn the building into four brand new affordable apartments.

The neglected property, which had fallen into a state of disrepair, was bought by the South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust last year.

The building needed significant repairs and restoration work, including a new roof, staircases, windows, floors and electrics and the trust worked with architects, planners, building control and structural surveyors to develop the refurbishment project.

The Housing Ventures scheme was set up in 2013 to build affordable housing for rent in the borough and was awarded £200,000 in funding from Homes England.

To date the scheme has 435 properties completed or ongoing, as well as bringing more than 43 long-term empty homes back into use, with a further 10 planned.

Peter Davison, chair of South Tyneside Housing Ventures Trust’s board, said: “The project has been quite challenging as the property was in a much poorer structural state than we originally thought so there was a lot more work involved than anticipated.

“But it has been rewarding too; the building has been given a total overhaul; it’s been made structurally sound and completely transformed.

“We’re really proud of what has been achieved here with this collaboration between Ventures and South Tyneside Homes and are looking forward to welcoming tenants.”

South Tyneside Homes’ Property Services carried out the work to convert the rundown building into four apartments, complete with brand new kitchens and bathrooms.

Coun Mark Walsh, Lead Member for Housing and Transport on South Tyneside Council, commented: “This building has been a boarded-up blot on the landscape for several years so I think everyone will agree that this is quite a transformation.

“The apartments are superb, and I think anyone would be proud to call them home.

“Bringing this derelict building back into use has benefited the whole community by giving the local area real lift as well as boosting the supply of quality affordable housing.”
