A bit of retail therapy in South Shields of the past

Who's for a bit of retail therapy?

Well how about a trip to New Green Street in December 1974, where you could have popped into Markworth’s shop and inspected some of the fabulous toys on display.

Or why not drop into the Alex Bruce shop, in East Boldon, in 1967, where the “modern” shelves were certainly well-stocked. The Gazette at the time reported: “It has the lay-out of a supermarket but the personal service is still there.” Then again, you could always “mooch” around Woolies in Jarrow’s Ormonde Street or visit Milbruns, the “spacious and airy” bakers in Frederick Street, South Shields or the town’s Alan Brown Photographics shop.

And, of course, in order to get from one shop to the other, you’d need to fill up (if you were lucky enough to own a car!). The solution – a visit to Redwood Motorama, in Jarrow.
