A brand new South Shields venue promises not to be ‘just another coffee shop’

A father and son have launched a new coffee shop venture in South Shields.

A brand new coffee shop is bringing a taste of Honduras to South Shields with a Dragon’s Den-featured coffee brand.

John Saunders and his son, Ben, have opened Uncle Buck’s Coffee Shop, on Western Approach - with the venue being a tribute to John’s longstanding nickname.

The pair recently moved with their wedding décor business from Jarrow to South Shields and decided to open the coffee shop after they found themselves constantly buying drinks for their clients.

With coffee sourced from the Caribe Coffee Company, which has a venue in Sunderland, Uncle Buck’s is looking to bring good quality hot drinks to South Shields.

‘We don’t want to be just another coffee shop’

John said: “We’ve ran a wedding décor company for quite a long time and we decided that we would expand from Jarrow and move over to South Shields.

“However, we ended up in a situation where we kept getting coffees for people who came to the site so we decided that we’d just open our own shop.

“Then by accident, we met a coffee importer at a wedding show and we loved the taste so we just went for it.

“My nickname has always been Uncle Buck - hence the name of the shop.

“We’re running this with the same structure as our wedding décor company, we have always built ourselves on high standards of quality and service so that has been carried on with this.

“We only wanted to do this if we thought it was very good - we don’t want to be just another coffee shop.”

Expanding the business

Having only opened in April, John has revealed that the feedback has been positive so far and has plans to expand the operation.

He added: “Everyone who has come in has liked it but we’ve only been open for a month so we’re still in the process of establishing it.

“The response from our customers and businesses around us has been really good.

“We’re now looking at the possibility of expanding to do local deliveries so we are hoping that it works.

“A big thing for us was to keep our prices reasonable so it is £3.50 for a latte or £5 for a panini or a toastie with a hot drink.”
