Aerial view shows potential scale of a new South Shields self-storage development
A new self-storage site is set to come to South Shields.
An aerial photo of a vacant site in the Bede Industrial Estate area gives an insight into the scale of a potential new self-storage site in South Tyneside.
The site, which sits on the corner of Shaftesbury Avenue and Towers Place near McDonald’s and Burger King restaurants and a Tesco supermarket, was previously occupied by a now demolished warehouse.
Earlier this month, South Tyneside Council recommended plans to construct the new self-storage site for approval, with Silverstone Building Consultancy being awarded a contract to carry out the works.

The project will be lead by Josh Brown, Silverstone’s associate director, and will involve bringing 50 storage containers into use as phase one oft he development.
The scheme, which is owned by Kal NE Ltd, will see works to grade the ground, install new drainage and bringing utilities on to the site as well installing a secure perimeter fence.
It is estimated that the development work will take around 16 weeks to complete.
Speaking ahead of work starting, Josh said: “We’re happy to be supporting the creation of a new business and jobs in South Shields and are looking forward to getting started on site.”
The plans were put to the vote at a meeting of the Planning Committee on February 9, 2026, and won unanimous support from members of the decision-making panel.
Councillor Chris Davies described the application as a “good development” which delivered biodiversity net gain as well as providing trees.
