Alan Shearer admits he was "surprised" to see Rafa Benitez stay on as Newcastle United manager.

Benitez has signed a revised three-year deal to stay at St James's Park despite the club's relegation to the Championship.

The news was confirmed last night, with the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss presented to the media at the ground.

Benitez has spoken of his desire to get the club back in the top flight at the first time of asking and has targeted winning trophies during his spell in charge.

The news was welcomed by Newcastle legend Shearer, who took to social media to express his delight.

Shearer tweeted: "Surprised but delighted that #Rafa has decided to stay. Great for the club and the city @nufc #NUFC"
