Here's a supergroup that's worth your time...

Comprising Slowdive singer Rachel Goswell, Mogwai noise merchant Stuart Braithwaite, Editors guitarist Justin Lockey and his filmmaker brother James, Minor Victories are a rare collective who absolutely add up to the sum of their parts.

And sound-wise they're more or less precisely what fans will have hoped for; a glorious meld of power and beauty resembling a bigger Slowdive and prettier Mogwai.

Characterised by shimmering oceans of guitars, luscious strings and Goswell's elegant voice, it's a cocktail which at its best delivers genuine moments of wonder.

Give Up The Ghost, for instance, is a marvellous scene-setting opener, while standout Folk Arp's serene beginnings precede a blissful six-and-a-half minute sonic build.

There's no little variety too, with For You Always even featuring a typically rambling guest appearance from another cult icon, Sun KiIl Moon's Mark Kozelek.

The album is even more remarkable when you learn that its creators were never all in the same place at once. The wonders of modern technology eh?

Highly recommended. 8/10
