South Tyneside is not short of eerie drinking spots, with tales of a poltergeist who haunts the toilets or an ale house occupied by the spirit of a giggling Irish prostitute.

9. The Jolly Sailor, East Street, Whitburn
Legend has it the pub is haunted by a Green Lady - a lovelorn girl who was dumped by a visiting coachman, and pined herself away. She haunts the upstairs of the pub in her fine green dress, bought to impress her would-be suitor. There are reports of paranormal activity including a nurse called Rachael and the spirit of a man who apparently died of unnatural causes in the pub. Photo: Google Maps
10. The Lord Nelson, Monkton Lane, Hebburn
The 1920s pub is home to one of South Tyneside’s more modern ghosts, it seems, with a snazzy spectre wearing modern clothing with an open neck shirt and light-coloured trousers.
